In IB English (vwo 5) the students have been studying the novel “1984” by George Orwell. During this term we focus on democracy. Students researched freedom of speech, one of the hallmarks of democracy. They looked at political cartoons and street art by artists like Banksy – and created their own! Then they have studied “On Tyranny” by Timothy Snyder and researched the political points embodied by the Republican and Democratic parties in the USA. Finally, students were asked to vote Republican or Democrat whilst pretending to vote in the recent American Midterm elections.
